United Airlines 767 To Newark Returns to London: Battery Failure

A United Airlines Boeing 767 bound for Newark has made a return to it’s origin point of London Heathrow due to a battery failure onboard in the last few moments.

Information is limited surrounding this return, but here is what we know about the flight so far.

United Airlines flight UA921, operated by a Boeing 767 which suffered a battery issue, is a routine scheduled flight between London Heathrow and Newark.

The affected rotation in this return was N674UA.

As per data from Planespotters.net, N674UA is a 24.2 year old Boeing 767-300 that was delivered to the airline in April 2000.

Of the 767-300 variant, the airline has 37 of them in the fleet.

Of the 37, all but six are in active service.

Furthermore, average fleet age for the variant at the airline stands at 28.2 years.

United Airlines flight UA921 departed London Heathrow at 1750 local time earlier today.

The aircraft proceeded westbound towards Newark.

As per data from RadarBox, United Airlines flight UA921 made a series of holds at the Atlantic Crossing Entry Point.

From there, the decision was made to return to London Heathrow and not continue to Newark.

It is clear to note that the aircraft did not declare an emergency via the 7700 squawk code at any point during this incident.

UA921 landed safely back into LHR at 2135 UK time.

As per @FlightEmergency on X, it is understood that the cause of the return of United Airlines flight UA921 London-Newark was due to a battery failure.

If this is the case, then it was the right call made by the crew in the cockpit.

Risking it across the Atlantic Ocean could have had deadlier consequences.

It is key to note that the pilots in the cockpit have procedures that they can follow in scenarios like this.

Looking ahead, all eyes will be on how long this aircraft will be grounded following this battery failure.
