Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) is reported to have successfully passed the government test of the Advanced Off-Board Electronic Warfare (AOEW) system which is the electronic attack capabilities installed on a U.S Navy MH-60R helicopter.

This new test marks the first in the program’s development of the system which is to able to perform engagement testing.

This will demonstrate the system’s ability to detect and deter threats, and quality system performance. This is all being done while being integrated and controlled by the target platform.

Partnership with US Navy

The U.S. Navy has partnered up with Lockheed Martin on this impressive milestone at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland.

The integration event was tested with the capabilities of the system and intra-operability on the MMH-60R helicopter platform.

Lockheed Martin Perspective

Deon Viergutz, vice president of Spectrum Convergence at Lockheed Martin stated: “The AOEW system is one of the most advanced, complex electronic warfare systems ever developed.”

He added: “AOEW is a force multiplier for our sailors that will help them dominate and control the battlespace without firing a single shot.”

“It is designed with evolutionary capabilities, set up to be completely programmable so that it can develop, deliver, and deploy new techniques as the threat landscape changes.”

What is an AOEW?

The AOEW is a pod-based electronic warfare missile defense system. This system will provide the Navy of the United States with enhanced electronic surveillance and attack capabilities against anti-ship missile threats.

As of now, the latest system has successfully undergone stages of crucial development and operational tests at Lockheed Martin’s facility in Syracuse, New York.

Lockheed Martin has stated some useful facts about the AOEW. Firstly, the AOEW can be fully used with the Aegus Baseline 9C.2+ and the Surface Warfare Electronic Warfare Improvement Program Block II.

Secondly, AOEW leverages open-system architect solutions allowing for fast upgrades, interoperability, reduced lifecycle costs, and prompt insertion of new hardware.

Lastly, the system’s design and technology of AOEW built the backbone to deliver similar capabilities on other platforms; let it be small ships or unmanned aerial and surface vehicles.

Next steps and further developments

Of course, more tests are to be demonstrated used by the AOEW pod on host platforms are planned in 2024.

Lockheed Martin will use the test results to refine the performance of the system. As of now, the AOEW is under a low-rate initial production contract, and deliveries of the first system are expected in the next year.

Lockheed Martin is Headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, and is one of the world’s most well-known corporations, in the fields of global security and the aerospace sector.

The company now employs approximately 116,000 people worldwide and is now very deep and intertwined in the research design, development, manufacture, integration, and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products, and services.
