A Manchester-bound easyJet flight was forced to divert after a passenger claimed a bomb was onboard and attempted to open an exit door in flight on 24 May 2025.

easyJet flight U22148, an Airbus A320neo enroute from Dalaman, Turkey, to Manchester, was forced to make an emergency landing in Frankfurt after a female passenger caused a midair disturbance.

easyJet U22148 Inflight Incident

The disruptive incident unfolded shortly after takeoff around midnight local time. The passenger began screaming about a bomb on board and attempted to open an emergency exit door.

The behaviour prompted the crew to divert the flight, landing in Frankfurt at approximately 2:30 a.m. local time.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the passenger’s actions were reported as chaotic. Witnesses reported her running up and down the aisle, shouting that the plane was “going down” and claiming a bomb was on board.

She allegedly ripped off the handle cover of an emergency exit door and tried to access life jackets and oxygen masks.

Several passengers restrained the woman, allowing the cabin crew to secure her at the rear of the aircraft. Upon landing, German authorities boarded the plane and took the woman into custody for investigation. No further details have been released about potential charges.

The diversion caused significant delays. Due to Frankfurt Airport’s curfew and limited ground handling, passengers remained on board for hours before disembarking around 5 a.m.

easyJet provided refreshment vouchers, but limited hotel availability left some travellers stranded in the terminal. The flight eventually resumed, arriving in Manchester at 1:40 p.m. on May 25.

An easyJet spokesperson confirmed the inflight incident. “Flight EZY2148 from Dalaman to Manchester on May 24 diverted to Frankfurt due to a passenger behaving disruptively onboard.”

Conclusion

The crew’s swift response, guided by their training, ensured the easyJet bomb threat situation was managed effectively. The inflight incident not only disrupted the flight but also highlighted the growing issue of unruly passenger behaviour in aviation.

This incident reflects a broader trend, with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency reporting a 13% increase in midair disruptions in 2024.

Such events underscore the challenges airlines face in maintaining safety and order. Passengers are urged to remain calm and follow crew instructions to avoid escalating situations.

As investigations continue, the aviation industry may need to explore stricter measures to deter disruptive behaviour and ensure safe travels for all.
