QantasLink Upgrades Regional South Australia Services with Q400
Regional South Australians are set to experience a significant boost in air travel. Qantas plans to upgrade all Adelaide regional routes to the larger QantasLink Q400 turboprop aircraft.
This service upgrade promises more seats, improved reliability, and a faster travel experience.
The aircraft upgrade will impact key regional destinations including Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Mount Gambier, and Kangaroo Island.
Upgrading the Regional Fleet
The latest service enhancement is made possible by Qantas’ substantial investment in 14 new Q400s for its regional fleet. It signals the airline’s drive to improving its regional Australian operations.
Upon completion of the transition, Qantas will have three Q400s based permanently in the state of South Australia.
Currently, Qantas operates over 50 return flights weekly between Adelaide and these regional cities. These vital connections serve residents, tourists, businesses, and the resource sector.
The current smaller Q300 aircraft, with 50 seats, are being gradually retired and replaced by the spacious 74-seat Q400. This increase in capacity represents a significant improvement for travellers.
Beyond the aircraft upgrade, Qantas is also enhancing its onboard beverage service. From mid-March, eight new regional wines will be featured on all QantasLink turboprop flights.
Six of these wines proudly hail from South Australian wineries, including Stonehaven, Pioneer Road, and Angove, showcasing the region’s rich viticulture.
Significance for Regional South Australia
QantasLink CEO Rachel Yangoyan emphasized the significance of this upgrade for regional South Australia. “These larger aircraft mean more seats, faster flights, and better reliability for South Australia, underscoring our commitment to the regions,” she stated.
“Bringing the 74-seat Q400 back to Adelaide after 10 years, and introducing it for the first time to destinations like Mount Gambier and Whyalla, is a major step forward.”
Ms. Yangoyan also highlighted the importance of investing in the communities Qantas serves. “Improving the travel experience is crucial, but so is supporting local economies,” she explained.
The wine overhaul, showcasing South Australian wines to over 3.5 million customers annually, is expected to boost local tourism and economic growth.

Adelaide Airport Managing Director, Brenton Cox, echoed this sentiment. “Regional flights are essential for our country towns and cities,” he said.
“QantasLink’s introduction of newer, larger aircraft is a huge win for regional customers who rely on these services for work, appointments, and connecting with loved ones. It’s also a boon for our tourism sector.”
South Australian Tourism Minister, Zoe Bettison, hailed the development as exciting news for regional connectivity and tourism.
“Faster, larger aircraft on regional routes will not only reduce travel times but also increase capacity, making it easier for visitors to explore our beautiful regions,” she commented. “We’re working closely with airlines and Adelaide Airport to ensure South Australia remains at the forefront of aviation and tourism development.”
“This aligns perfectly with our strategy to grow our visitor economy and showcase everything South Australia offers.”
Conclusion
Qantas’s presence in South Australia currently supports over 870 jobs. Furthermore, Qantas Freight plays a vital role, moving approximately 10 million kilograms of freight in and out of the state. This further demonstrates the airline’s broad contribution to the region.
This upgrade signifies a continued investment in South Australia, promising improved connectivity and economic benefits for the coming year.
